Pelosi-Markey go to Canada
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Select Committee on Energy Independence Chair Edward Markey are traveling to Canada. While there they will meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach — who are expected to lobby them to support dirty oil sands development.
They have been long time champions of a clean energy future and a transition away from dirty energy sources.
Just before their trip, the No Tar Sands Oil coalition sent Representatives Pelosi and Markey a friendly letter reminding them that:
- dirty tar sands oil is not a path to a clean energy future
- stopping the Keystone XL dirty tar sands oil pipeline is key to preventing the U.S. from becoming inescapably addicted to dirty tar sands crude.
Hours before Pelosi and Markey were to arrive, environmental groups and the cosmetics company Lush delivered 8,000 postcards to Prime Minister Stephen Harper —- along with a demonstration opposing dirty tar sands fuel. See pics from the demo in the Rainforest Action Network slideshow below.
