Love Winter?
As the Winter Olympics demonstrated in Vancouver, winter is on the wane.
It’s no secret that global warming threatens winter as we know it… and the sports, recreation and tourism that rely upon it.
But the reckless expansion of the oil sands dooms the fight to save winter.
“You can’t exploit tar shale and tar sands without pushing things way beyond the limit. They’re just too carbon intensive.”
— renowned NASA climate scientist James Hansen
Consider:
- The oil sands are Canada’s fastest growing global warming polluter;
- Oil sands production emits three times more carbon than conventional oil;
- This is the dirtiest oil — and the most destructive project — on earth!
The oil sands threaten the winter economy
In places like Canada, where ice hockey defines a nation, the ability of its citizens to regularly play its national sport might end.
In Europe, the OECD reports that the skiing industry is already under threat, and it’s getting worse.
And in the United States, oil sands-fueled global warming threatens snow-based recreation that contributes $66 billion to the economy every year, and supports more than half a million jobs.
