The provincial government officially launched today the next phase in its energy and oilsands marketing campaign, which includes electronic billboard ads in New York’s Times Square.

The government has paid $17,000 to run 10-second spots on the billboard three times an hour until Oct. 15. The ad reads the same as the one that ran a few months ago in the Washington Post: “A good neighbour lends you a cup of sugar. A great neighbour supplies you with 1.4 million barrels of oil per day.” The ads, which flash on the screen in three separate segments, have been running since Sept. 1, said officials in the premier’s office.

“We need to protect, we need to grow our markets and we need to defend our province and its industries,” Premier Ed Stelmach said Friday, while announcing the next phase of the campaign during a speech at a weekly newspapers convention in Calgary.

Also part of the online and ad campaign is an updated provincial oilsands website – www.oilsands.alberta.ca – that includes updated still photographs and a set of five new videos filmed in Fort McMurray and Cold Lake.

The website also contains e-postcards that Albertans can send to friends and relatives to engage them in a conversation about responsible oilsands development.
