Officials say trucks and heavy equipment damaged county roads during the building of TransCanada Corp.‘s Keystone pipeline.

The county’s highway superintendent, Kerry Johnson, said trucks from a Keystone contractor repeatedly violated an agreement with the company to detour around a four-miles stretch of road.

TransCanada spokesman Jeff Rauh said the company has a responsibility to fix the damage.

Keystone first offered a $200,000 settlement that the county rejected.

County State’s Attorney Brad Cruff said the agreement does not cover future damage.

The TransCanada Keystone pipeline is to run from Canada through the eastern Dakotas and Nebraska to refineries in Kansas, Illinois and Oklahoma.
