Campaign Against Enbridge Tar Sands Pipeline Expands to Enbridge’s Customers in Ontario

Toronto – Today Environmental Defence, a national environmental organization, joined the campaign against a proposed pipeline by Enbridge that would carry tar sands oil across B.C. and to Asia via tankers along Canada’s sensitive Pacific coast. Recently, B.C.’s municipalities passed a resolution opposing the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline, building on a declaration by several First Nations in March also opposing the proposed pipeline.
“Enbridge tries to paint itself green in Ontario, but the reality is that it is the largest shipper of tar sands oil on the continent, with plans to expand even more by trampling on the wishes of B.C. First Nations and municipalities,” said Gillian McEachern of Environmental Defence. “We join with others demanding Enbridge pull its pipeline proposal and instead become a responsible clean energy company, and are now urging Enbridge customers to send that message to the company directly.”
Enbridge wants to be the first company to enable massive supertankers to carry tar sands oil to Asia by building a 1,200 kilometre pipeline from the tar sands to Kitimat, B.C., where the oil will be shipped through pristine and fragile coastal waters. The proposed pipeline would allow tar sands production to expand by 30%, and a spill could devastate the coast for generations.
The first phase of Environmental Defence’s Ontario customer campaign will include:
· A mailing to 25,000 homes in the GTA urging Enbridge gas customers to contact the CEO, Patrick Daniel, to stop plans to build the Northern Gateway pipeline · Ads in local newspapers in the same neighbourhoods with the headline “The biggest cost of Enbridge doesn’t show up on your bill” · Dozens of canvassers going door to door asking customers and residents to sign a message to EnbridgeEnbridge Inc. owns Enbridge Gas Distribution, which supplies 1.9 million homes, many within the GTA, with 408 billion cubic feet of natural gas each year.
