Less than 24 hours after Premier Stelmach met with U.S. House of Representatives leader Nancy Pelosi to defend the environmental record of Alberta’s oilsands, charges are laid against oilsands giant Suncor for improper water management in Fort McMurray.

Alberta Environment has laid charges against the corporation for allegedly releasing contaminated water into the Athabasca River at a site located approximately 20 kilometers north of the city.

The company is also charged with providing misleading information to Alberta Environment regarding stormwater runoff.

The alleged activity resulted in stormwater running into the Athabasca River in May of 2008 during the first stages of construction to their upgrader site.

Suncor’s first court appearance is scheduled for November 3rd in Fort McMurray.

The company could face a fine of up to $500,000 if convicted.
