Here’s the Sierra Club’s response to the Alberta government’s $268,000 pro-oilsands marketing campaign:
“These Ads should raise some serious concerns for local people in Alberta as it shows the government is more concerned with their image, than the real health and environmental concerns of local people. If the government really wanted to do something effective to address the mounting criticisms around the Tar Sands, it would be putting the same time, energy, and resources that they do into public relations into actually addressing the growing toxic problems associated with the tar sands and investing into building green jobs and a green economy right here in the sunniest province in Canada.
The government doesn’t have a public relations problem they have a growing environment impacts, health, and Indigenous rights problem and these are not going to be solved through glossy PR campaigns. PR ads are not going to address treaty concerns of local First Nations, clean up the sprawling toxic lakes, cure the growing health concerns, or stop the ongoing environmental destruction that results from tar sands development. Actions speak louder than Ads.”
